The National Autumn Exhibitions Plovdiv 2023 brings together nine different exhibitions, arranged in the exhibition spaces of three of the houses of the Ancient Plovdiv Municipal Institute, under the title State Functions (originally "Functions of the state").
State Functions undertakes an artistic attempt to detach the phenomena from the endless chain of causes and effects - an endless, as it were, fatalistic sequence, to which man is inevitably and obediently connected, together with his perceptions, with his reflex to a surfaced effectivity. Instead, State Functions seeks opportunities to systematize and convey the sensations of the fragile balance of the given moment, without concern for what led to it or arises as a result of it. There are sufficient grounds for such a possibility, insofar as the single artistic expression represents precisely such an unstable moment, closed in its immediate limits. At the same time, the function of the state should also be able to convey the projections of the authentic human experience at the specific moment, bearing traces of immediate vision.
The National Autumn Exhibitions are one of the most prestigious forums for contemporary Bulgarian fine art and are a key event in the cultural calendar of Plovdiv. They are organized by the Plovdiv Municipality. Hosts of the event are Ancient Plovdiv Municipal Institute, Plovdiv and the City Art gallery - Plovdiv Plovdiv.
